Terrors and Experts
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (March, 1996)
Average review score:

Excellent bookEspecially if you are one of those people who is disillousioned with much of psychoanalysis, Phillips has an incredible way of presenting paradox, and thinking about symptoms and psychologists in new and interesting ways. A must if you're a psychologist, and a double must if you're in grad school. The only thing negative I can say about Phillips is that his writing style can start to repeat after a while so its best not to read two Phillips books back to back.
Psychoanalysis as Subject and Object"People come for psychoanalysis - or choose someone to have a conversation with - when they feel they can no longer keep a secret." In this slim and satisfying book, Phillips distills his not inconsiderable devotion to psychoanalysis into six thoughtful essays. Phillips seems to have read everything; he thinks deeply, and has an astonishing ability to synthesize. His assertions challenge the reader, and he supports them with evidence.
His essays read like easy, intelligent musings, but he has slyly assembled his facts. Some of his sources are Lacan, Winnicott, Freud, Ferenczi, Franz Kafka, Khan, Descartes - among many others. He's an original, a clinician as well as a theoretician, and has a compassionate heart as well as a great mind.

This is a great teaching toolThis is a terriffic book for use in the music classroom, and at home. As a book that can be either sung or read, it is versatile. It's large size and colorful illustrations draw kids attention. I have personally found it to be very effective with my kindergarten through third grade students. I highly reccommend it to anyone looking for a good book for younger kids that can be sung or read! I highly suggest Pam Adams books.
My 2-year-year old learned how to count to 10 reading this!My 2-year-old loves to sing the song along with me, and loves to hold this sturdy book. The illustrations are eye-catching and hold his interest until we finish the song. The rhythm of the tune helped him learn more complex word patters like "came rolling home." It is printed in bright colors, on thick paper, and can withstand some toddler handling. This book is similar to the other books illustrating children's folk tunes, but this is by far my son's favorite!

Tomorrow's Eve

look to the past to preview the futurethis book is brilliant. it captures perfectly the obsession of the french decadent movement with the female and what the male will do to control "woman." I will not give away any details of the story, but i must say the female as vampiric, hysterical, and simply put, sick, is what the character of thomas edison in this novel tries to put an end to by making his own version of "the female" that will be better suited to the world and society, but actually selfishly, to the needs of the male, and in particular mr. edison in the novel. it is a brilliant novel and i recommend THE DECADENT READER, from which i read this novel, it contains more unknown and unfortunately unread literature from this extremely fascinating movement at the end of the nineteenth century.
Decadent masterpieceThis little known novel is a masterpiece of Decadent literature (a brief movement localized in France around the turn of the last century that was influenced mainly by the poetry of Baudelaire and the theories of evolution put forth by Darwin). It tells the story of a fictionalized Edison who builds a female cyborg to exist in place of the unattainable love object of a tortured young man. She is animated by the spirit of a ghost and has the appearance of a Venus statue. Villiers, in the decadent tradition, lauds artifice above "nature," writing characters who traverse the world of illusion as that which is more real than real, a world in which appearance and the material are everything. This book might be of particular interest to feminists: Villiers only writes women as artifical beings, hysterics, ghosts, objects of fetishism. This book is a must read for any one interested in metaphysics and the rhetoric of "image" versus "being."

Turquoise Days: The Weird World of Echo & the Bunnymen
Published in Paperback by Soft Skull Pr (September, 2002)
Average review score:

Great BookI'm so glad I came across this book! It's obvious Chris Adams was allowed into the inner Bunnyman circle. Lyrics, conversations, stories, this book has beaucoup info. It's the best book I've read on a band in a long time.
The coolest book ever publishedThis book goes beyond a mere biographic narrative of a band. It delivers as advertised, presented in the coolest layout design I've ever seen. If you're a Bunnymen fan then this is a must have; the lyrics alone are worth it, if you're a music fan then this is a must have because of the historical content with regards to music, Liverpool, and it shows that as a society there was substance in the music we listened to. This book proves "POPULAR" music did not just move from the 70's and disco into the 80's and hair bands. There was Echo and the Bunnymen bridging the gap from "POPULAR" music over to music that mattered and here they are telling us how it all happened. Mr. Adams has redefined the rock/music biography. Excellent!

Great book by a great author!A terrific companion to the series, this book delighted both me and my children! If you enjoy the Wild Thornberrys, then you will treasure this book. Mr. Beechen captures the charachters perfectly, and the story is enchanting. This is a must have for any family library.
For All AgesI had such fun reading this book. The characters were true to the series, and the plot was witty. Adults and children alike can enjoy reading the book and looking at the pictures. I hope Mr. Beechen keeps contributing to the series.

Unseen Power: How Mutual Funds Threaten the Political and Economic Wealth of Nations
Published in Hardcover by Stoddart Pub (April, 2001)
Average review score:

Understanding the current bustThis is an excellent book on how financial markets work and on why they have become so much more volatile in recent years. It explains how the performance pressures on fund mangers are making markets less efficient and why and how this inefficiency explains recent financial crises and the ups and downs of the stock market. Unlike most economists, Dr. Harmes successfully predicted the collapse of stock prices. He gives a sound explanation for why the Dow, and not just tech stocks, were overvalued and why the current correction and slowdown was so hard to predict - but why it could have been. His explanation builds and expands on Shiller's "Irrational Exuberance" argument and provides useful lessons to help investors in the current period of volatility.
Monetary policy, currency fluctuation, and herd behaviourThis book is not getting the attention it deserves. It is an outstanding book based on Dr. Harmes's PHd thesis from York University. He seems to cover everything: monetary policy, exchange rate fluctuations, capital controls, and herd behaviour. If you have some background in economics even better. Conservatives won't like the arguments but then again conservatives still think markets are 100% efficient!
